Description

I was looking for a deep space object that wasn't going to be to hard, as the limited clear nights here in Michigan settle in over the winter. PLUS I have to send in my main ES 165mm telescope lens housing in to get the objective lens cleaned out. Over the past few years it has been building up debris in between the triplet lens.

Abell 5 is not captured often. I would suspect because it is not all that interesting of a planetary nebula. Plus it is super faint. The magnitude is quoted as 18.0. I got a few more nights than expected for this time of hear, so I piled on more Ha. I did find that I was able to pull out a bit more Ha on the outskirts of the shell, though.

The planetary nebula Abell 5 (PK 141-7.1) was discovered in 1955 by the American astronomer George Ogden Abell on the photo plates of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS). Most of these 86 PNs discovered on the POSS photo plates are large and have a low surface brightness, which suggests that their stage of development is advanced. Abell described the PN as an incomplete ring with a diameter of 134" x 121".
